Next Gen News - Episode #105

March 28th, 2012

Welcome to our latest episode of Next Gen News, CraveOnline's weekly gaming podcasts with your hosts Joey Davidson, Mike White and myself, Erik Norris.

On this week's show we're discussing in-game tutorials. The conversation was sparked by Mike's recent attempt to learn and play a game called Wakfu, an experience that quickly forced him to turn to the internet and forums to figure out what the hell he should be doing in the game. So the question was posed: when designing a game, what is the proper balance between holding the hand of the player to push them forward and letting them discover what the game holds by themselves? That's the question we dive into on this week's program.

Additionally, after 105 episodes we figured it was finally time to let our listeners really know who they're listening to week after week. That's why we've started a "Getting to Know Us" segment, which should be a regular thing from this point forward (here's hoping!). To kick off this new segment, we're detailing our rituals when we sit down to game for long stretches of time.

Next Gen News - Episode #104

March 21st, 2012

This week's episode of Next Gen News focuses entirely on sequels that coulda, shoulda, woulda been just as good or better than their predecessors. Erik has been playing Ninja Gaiden 3. Supposedly, the game is a complete departure from the series' strengths.

That's what got us talking about other games in the past that have done the same thing. Sometimes departures can be great for franchises with history. Other times? Not so much. Tune in to hear us rant and rave, as per usual.

Next Gen New - Episode #103

March 14th, 2012

Welcome to a new episode of Next Gen News, CraveOnline's weekly gaming podcast with your hosts Erik Norris, Alex Keen and Mike White. Unfortunately, Joey Davidson wasn't able to make it this week.

On this week's program we're continuing the discussion of gamer entitlement. I wrote an editorial yesterday about some of the worst cases of gamer entitlement and it started quite the debate in our comment section (read also: Erik witch hunt). So we're using that article as a jumping-off point for Alex and Mike to voice their opinions on the subject, of which they have plenty to say.

Next Gen News - Episode #102

March 7th, 2012

We’re back for episode #102 of Next Gen News, CraveOnline’s weekly gaming podcast with your hosts Erik Norris, Alex Keen, Joey Davidson and Mike White.

On this week’s show we discuss two major games, one which just released (read our snap judgments!) and one that just saw its first trailer hit the internet. We are of course talking about Mass Effect 3 and Assassin’s Creed III, respectively. Both Erik and Joey dive into what they’re enjoying about BioWare’s epic trilogy concluder, covering the breath of options available in the game, as well as touching on the Kinect integration, multiplayer, and arguing over how a single statistic determines if you’re ready to take the fight back to those Reaper bastards.

In regards to Assassin’s Creed III, our crew shares their excitement about the Revolutionary War setting of the game. We also manage to compare Ubisoft’s latest to both The Patriot and The Last of the Mohicans, although we doubt Mel Gibson or Daniel Day Lewis will be showing up to the party (we can always dream!). Finally, we ponder if Assassin’s Creed III will finally put Desmond Miles in the spotlight for more than 15 minutes.

Next Gen News - Episode #101

March 1st, 2012

The CraveOnline crew gets together to talk about Sony’s follow-up to the PSP, the PlayStation Vita. Erik and Joey both have one, Mikey and Alex have very brief play experience.

The show is quick, but that doesn’t mean it’s not chocked full of info. We'll talk quite about the system, its games and a few of its play experiences.
